Retaining Walls
Many hillside landscapes feature retainer walls to create level areas or hold up banks. Old timbers such as railway sleepers create a rustic effect while other styles add great character to a site. Larger walls may require engineers drawings and council approval.

Sleeper Retainers
Here is a fine example of a wall made from railway sleepers. Note the additional feature of the garden edging using short pieces of sleeper. This type of wall still needs good foundations if it is to remain in position for many years. Railway sleepers are usually made form either pine or jarrah, the latter timber, an Australian hardwood, being the longer lasting of the two.

Treated Timber Retainers
This retainer wall is constructed using modern treated timber and will last for many years. The somewhat harsh top edge will be softened once the garden above is planted with overhanging creepers and shrubs.

Rock Walls
Rock walls make an excellent natural looking wall that fits well into just about any landscape, adding a cottage garden feel to an area. This style is chosen more for lower walls and is very suitable for retainer walls that are not intended to be straight.

Segmented Retainer
A very attractive segmented retainer holds a high bank away from the house. Notice how the wall is curved at the far end. This wall material is low maintenance and very strong and durable. It has the advantage that if ever it needs to be moved then the blocks can be lifted and repositioned.
